Rekha Gupta BJP

Delhi saw history unfold when Rekha Gupta, a veteran politician and past President of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU), was chosen to be the fourth female Chief Minister of the nation’s capital. Her name was declared by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in its effort to silence speculations made for weeks, giving the nation’s capital’s political map a major turnaround.

Gupta is one of the few woman leaders to hold the position of power in Delhi, preceded by BJP’s Sushma Swaraj, Congress’ Sheila Dikshit, and Aam Aadmi Party’s Atishi. She came to prominence after a sweep in Sambal’s Shalimar Bagh constituency, where she defeated AAP candidate Bandana Kumari by over 29,000 votes

Early Life and Education

Rekha Gupta was born on 19th July 1974 in Nandgarh village of Jind district of Haryana. Her father, a committed bank officer, relocated the family to Delhi in 1976. Rekha was only two years old when the congested city of Delhi was her home.

Her student days took her to Delhi University, where she was a very active campus student of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student arm of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Student politics led her to become the President of DUSU for the year 1996-1997.

In no time, she gained public support and turned out to be the National Secretary of BJYM between 2004 and 2006. Her commitment and leadership abilities helped her secure a special position within the party volunteers.

Her political success came in 2007 when she was elected a councillor in MCD elections from North Pitampura constituency. She proved herself as an administrative person as President, Women’s Welfare and Child Development Committee of MCD for the period between 2007 and 2009.

Rekha Gupta’s Rise to Chief Minister

BJP’s landslide victory in the 2025 Delhi Vidhan Sabha elections with 48 seats out of 70 opened the door for Gupta’s entry as Chief Minister. Her integrity, honesty, and grass-root connectiveness made her the obvious choice for the coveted role.
